The village of Rochester is located in Sangamon County, IL, just seven miles southeast of the Springfield city center. With a history steeped in 19th century frontier ways and the early life of Abraham Lincoln, Rochester was founded in 1819 alongside the founding of Springfield and Sangamon County. Initially an agricultural community, the village was the home of the Brunk family, one of Sangamon County’s first settlers, famous in equestrian circles for cultivating the Morgan breed in Illinois.
Despite its close proximity to a major urban area, Rochester remains a quiet residential community of 3,500 residents, who enjoy the village’s small-town charm and neighborly atmosphere. For many, Rochester serves as a retreat from the busy workday in the state capitol, and the commute from downtown Springfield to Rochester is just a 30-minute drive roundtrip. With a surplus of recreational opportunities, Rochester residents can unwind at a baseball or soccer game at the Rochester Community Park, stretch their legs on the 5-mile Lost Bridge Trail, show off their game at one of 17 Springfield golf courses, or seek the big catch while fishing on Lake Springfield. Springfield attractions offer something for everyone in the family, from history to nature, arts and entertainment. The city boasts several museums and heritage sites, such as the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, the Illinois State Museum, and the Dana-Thomas House—the best preserved and most complete of Frank Lloyd Wright’s early Midwest prairie homes. For arts and entertainment, Springfield is home to the Hoogland Center for the Arts, the Illinois Symphony Orchestra, the Springfield Muni Opera, and the Springfield Theatre Center. The University of Illinois-Springfield, located just ten miles southwest of Rochester, offers a Visual Art Gallery and theater at the Sangamon Auditorium as well. Other popular family attractions in Springfield are the Henson Robinson Zoo, the Washington Park Botanical Garden, and the Adams Wildlife Sanctuary.
