Ardsley is a small suburban village located northeast of Manhattan in Southern Westchester County, NY. Prior to the Colonial period, the region that now includes Ardsley was occupied by the Weckqueskecks of the Mohican tribe. When the European settlers of the late 1700’s came to the area, the Weckqueskecks were forced out and the territory became the property of Frederick Philipse, who then established a Manor. When the American Revolution began, Philipse stayed loyal to Britain, and fled under the force of the new patriots. His property was divided up by the State, and sold to his former tenants. The new village grew at a steady pace over the next hundred years, with the establishment of a sawmill, gristmill, blacksmith shop, and three pickle factories. Once the Putnam Railroad and the New Croton Aqueduct were built in the early 1880’s, the Village of Ardsley was well on its way to modern development.
