Residents of Spotsylvania County not only benefit from being conveniently located near two bustling urban areas, but also enjoy a wide variety of attractions and recreation within their own community. Spotsylvania County has a vibrant arts culture, especially in Fredericksburg, where there is an abundance of unique galleries and studios, plus three performance arts venues—the Klein Theatre of the University of Mary Washington, the Riverside Center Children’s Theatre, and the Riverside Center Dinner Theatre. For a day of shopping and dining, Spotsylvania features the Spotsylvania Towne Centre—a shopping mall that has everything from high end fashion and beauty stores to home décor and electronics, as well as a movie theater. There are many restaurants, cafes, and taverns located throughout the county, as well as highly acclaimed wineries, such as the Lake Anna Winery and Mattaponi Winery. Enjoying Virginia’s full four seasons is easy in Spotsylvania County, with access to the Lake Anna State Park. Residents and visitors can boat, fish and water ski on the lake, while the park offers 13 miles of horseback riding, bicycling and hiking trails. In addition to art & theatre, dining and outdoor recreation, one attraction that Spotsylvania County shows off best is its history. The county offers great enjoyment for the Civil War history buff, with four major battlefield sites and the Civil War Life Museum. Residents and visitors can tour the county seat’s well-preserved landmarks at the Spotsylvania Courthouse historic district, including the Spotsylvania Jail (1855), the Spotswood Inn (1820), and the Spotsylvania Courthouse itself (1839). For a comprehensive picture of the community’s history, the Spotsylvania County Museum is located nearby in the Old Berea Christian Church. Also, another key historic attraction in the area is George Washington’s Ferry Farm located in Fredericksburg, where the nation’s first president spent much of his childhood.
