Remington, Virginia is located in southern Fauquier County, just 60 miles southwest of Washington D.C. Surrounded by the natural beauty of the Rappahannock River, Remington was founded as a town named Millview in the early 19th century. Once the town’s stretch of the Alexandria Railroad was completed in 1852, the name was changed to Rappahannock Station, and finally to Remington in 1890, in honor of Captain Remington, a popular local railroad conductor. Remington has always been a small town, but due to the nearby river, it served as a strategic Civil War location; along with various entanglements over Kelly’s Ford, the town witnessed the largest cavalry battle of the war—The Battle of Brandy Station, fought in 1863.
Today Remington, VA—with a population of just over 800 people—is a town of contrasts. While it still holds and preserves several vestiges of its war-torn past, such as Union and Confederate earthworks, and the visible ruins of bridges and other structures, Remington is well-known and loved for its peaceful and quiet country atmosphere. Many people come to Remington not only to experience a bit of history, but also to enjoy the beauty of the region’s four full seasons. Remington boasts several bicycling paths—the Tinpot Turn, Bealeton Loop, and Civil War Loop—all of which make for an exhilarating and fascinating ride through the hills, open fields, and historic sites of the area. The Rappahannock River is perfect for canoeing, kayaking, and fishing, and at a distance of 50 miles east or west, Remington residents can enjoy both the Chesapeake Bay area and Shenandoah National Park.
