Cullman, Alabama is part of Cullman County, located in the north-central portion of the state.  As a city with small town charm and big town conveniences, Cullman is saturated with history.  Beginning hundreds of years ago with small Native American villages, it has grown to a current population of about 15,000 people.  Cullman was incorporated as a city in 1878 and named after Colonel John G. Cullmann, a German refugee with the hopes of building a community for German immigrants.  History shows that Colonel Cullmann was responsible for bringing over as many as 10,000 Germans to the area.  The residents of Cullman took pride in their churches then as much as they do now.  In fact, the early settlers of Cullman are responsible for why today it is considered the “City of Churches.”  More historic facts and artifacts lie in the city’s many museums, heritage centers and historic districts.  Other attractions include Smith Lake which provides fishing among other water sports, and the North Alabama Birding Trail, a recently added trail for observing the assorted variety of birds in the area.  Cullman provides numerous parks for its residents, making camping, mountain biking, hiking and sports such as softball, soccer, basketball and more a part of everyday life.
