The city of Anaheim is located approximately 40 miles southeast of Los Angeles, in Orange County, California. Long before Orange County became famous as simply “OC,” the region was founded by 19th century German colonists interested in growing grapes and producing wine. The Germans purchased the land for a mere $2 per acre, and named the area Anaheim—inspired by the nearby Santa Ana River, and the German word “heim,” which means “home.” The area served as wine country until 1880, when the grapevines were destroyed by an unwelcome insect pest.
