Algonquin, Illinois, long called the Gem of the Fox River, is experiencing the most rapid growth in the town’s long history. First settled in 1834 and officially named Algonquin in 1847, the town is nestled in the rolling hills of the Fox River Valley in Northern Illinois. Algonquin is located five miles north of Interstate 90, and about 30 miles northwest of O’Hare Airport.

The town saw very slow growth over its first 130 years. Algonquin’s population at the 1980 Census was 5,834. That had doubled by the 1990 Census, and a special Census in 2003 found the population of Algonquin to be 27,885. Long known as a sleepy river town, the past 15 years have seen unexpected growth as Chicago’s urban sprawl has stalled far to the south. As a result, The Village of Algonquin has been able to retain a small town feel.

The rapid growth has certainly meant challenges for the Algonquin’s Village government, but the village continues to grow and thrive for a variety of reasons. Most importantly are quality of life, affordability of homes, and the quality of the schools. Massive retail and business construction along Algonquin’s Western edge has make a serious impact on the Villages financial underpinnings, and allowed for significant construction of needed to schools, parks, and municipal facilities.

Algonquin is centrally and conveniently located; a comfortable 60 to 90 minute drive to Milwaukee and Chicago, less than an hour from O’Hare International Airport, and minutes from a major Interstate. Despite the convenient access, most people are lured to the Village of Algonquin because you can live, work, and raise a family in the comfortable and beautiful confines of the Fox River Valley.
