Rising Sun is an attractive town with specialty shops, art galleries, campgrounds, bed & breakfasts, and a riverboat casino, the Grand Victoria. Homes have a wooded, peaceful setting, with beautiful views of the river and the Kentucky hills. Amenities include an art center open year-round; dining and shopping in the historic downtown area, which is getting a facelift. There are new streetlights, benches, banners and new sidewalks. Improvements to the riverfront continue to be made. A new economic initiative has just been launched with the unveiling of a new Web site, which is a great resource on the area and its quality of life. The Rising Sun/Ohio County Economic Development Commission calls it a “stop-shop for information.” Rising Sun is the recipient of the Community Legacy Award for outstanding achievement in preservation, enhancement and promotion of its distinctive heritage. The area was settled in 1798 and named by settler Robert Huston, who was supposed to have been struck by the view of the sun rising over the Kentucky hills.
