In the spring of 1909, four Indianapolis businessmen invested in the construction of a 2½ mile oval on 328 acres of land on the northwest side of town.  The Indianapolis Motor Speedway has since been home to some of the finest auto racing in the world. Seventeen years later, the town of Speedway was officially established.  Although the town of Speedway is completely surrounded by Indianapolis, it has its own town hall, police & fire departments, public library, and school system.  The Speedway school system consists of four elementary schools, one junior high school and Speedway High School, home of the Speedway Sparkplugs.  Speedway’s two spacious public parks and ten churches help maintain a small town atmosphere in the midst of a bustling metropolis. 

Every year hundreds of thousands of people travel to Speedway for the Indianapolis 500, the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard, and the Formula One US Grand Prix.  Despite its major tourist draw, Speedway is still a close-knit community, with approximately 15,000 residents.
