This attractive residential community was named for a Civil War fort that today serves as a park and community center. It stretches along a north-south ridge high above the Ohio River, providing scenic river views from many of its homes. Large, older homes and tree-lined streets are part of the charm of this city that maintains a small-town feel. Fort Thomas has a reputation for good city Government: and excellent schools. Highlands High School, located here, is one of only eight Kentucky schools listed in Newsweek’s 2006 Top 1,200 high schools in the country. Currently, the business district is being revitalized and the city and Fort Thomas merchants are working together to bring about a renaissance. The goal is development of a healthy business climate. Its leaders are pushing for the Midway District (on 62 acres and 51 buildings) to be designated a National Historic District. Two community events celebrated are Home for the Holidays Walk in December featuring caroling, carriage ride and bell ringing; and Fall Festival, sponsored by the Ft. Thomas merchants. It is home to Vito’s Café, which features singing servers. Ft. Thomas was founded in 1867.
