You can find Scottsville, Allen County just a short drive southeast of Bowling Green on Hwy. 231 or by 31-E north of Nashville. Allen County was named in honor of a hero of the War of 1812 named Colonel John Allen. Scottsville was established in 1816 and named for Gov. Charles Scott. There was a stagecoach line that ran between Louisville, KY and Nashville, TN that eventually became 31-E in the 20th century. Many travelers to this day take 31-E from town to town to visit the rural communities and to shop for antiques and collectibles or just to enjoy the beautiful scenery with its rolling hills and farmland.
Barren River Lake lies between Allen and Barren Counties and is just 12 miles northbound on 31-E from Scottsville. Many people travel to Allen County to hunt on its vast farmland and wooded acreage and to fish year round on the lake. Water sports are prevalent on the 10,100 acre lake from spring to fall.
Dollar General was founded in Scottsville in 1939 by J.L. Turner as a wholesale business. The dollar store concept took off in 1955 with the opening of its first retail stores that had all items for $1. The company went public in 1968 and now is a leader in the dollar store realm with more then 8,000 stores and still offers many items for $1.
