Take I-275 around the southeastern side of Hamilton County, and you’ll travel through quiet wooded hills that are part of Anderson Township. Its 31.2 square miles include a meticulously maintained park system utilizing 463 acres, plus over 500 acres of natural land never to be developed, purchased through its greenspace program. This is the only program of its kind in Ohio. Its implementation required changes in Ohio law to permit a township to buy land for preservation and protection purposes. Residents voiced their commitment to the program by passing a greenspace levy to fund it.
Located approximately 12 miles east of Cincinnati, Anderson Township is one of the most populated townships in Ohio. Founded in 1793, it did not develop quickly due to its distance from the city and its wooded hilly terrain. Population centers were farming outposts such as Forestville, Sweetwine and Fruit Hill; and settlements along the Little Miami River such as Newtown. After World War II, highway construction provided easier access to suburbs, bringing strong steady growth until the early 1990s, when dwindling land availability slowed development. Currently there is a variety of housing options and price ranges, with around 100 new housing units started yearly.
Anderson Township provides a comfortable lifestyle for its residents. Services include fire and police departments, the Forest Hills Local School District (consistently rated “Excellent” on the State Report Card) serving almost all the Township, the Anderson Area Chamber of Commerce, Recreation Department and Senior Center. Activities and events are planned through the year for all ages and for community-wide enjoyment. Anderson Trails Program, an initiative to connect neighborhoods with sidewalks and multi-use pathways, completed a $2.2M Five Mile Bike Trail. The new Township administration building with a performing arts auditorium is nearly finished. A wide variety of shopping, restaurants and entertainment venues are located in Anderson. Mercy Hospital Anderson, Mercy HealthPlex, Beech Acres, offices, places of worship, mass transit and other commercial development follow primarily the Beechmont Avenue corridor. Travel to downtown and airports is easy, thanks to 275 and 471. It’s truly a great place to “put down roots!”
