Madeira, Ohio’s first settler was John Hosbrook, who arrived in 1794. He was followed by John Jones in 1795. In 1872, the Marietta & Cincinnati Railroad built a station here (now a restaurant called Choo Choo). Its treasurer was a man named John Madeira and the community was named after him. It was incorporated as a village in 1910. The first church building in Madeira was a Methodist Church constructed in 1873. A highly desirable community, Madeira offers an excellent school system—boasting new elementary and middle schools and a renovated high school (Madeira High is a National Blue Ribbon School). St. Gertrude, a Catholic elementary school, is here. Housing options include all styles—contemporary, Cape Cod, colonial and ranch—in a range of prices. The neighborhood shopping district includes a number of specialty shops. A $110-million senior facility on Kenwood Road is scheduled to be built and completed in 2009. Development is strictly controlled to preserve the quiet, gracious sense of community. Madeira is convenient to downtown Cincinnati and to many office and industrial parks to the northeast.
