What do you first notice when you enter the Village of Mariemont? Mature trees shading wide boulevards. Picturesque Tudor-style buildings clustered artistically around a beautiful square highlighted by a fountain and gardens. It seems you’ve entered a quaint yesteryear community set in a park! Both beauty and a strong sense of community thrive together in this storybook-like setting.
Located approximately 4 miles east of downtown Cincinnati, Mariemont came into being thanks to the benevolent vision of one of the wealthiest women in the US in the early 1900s, Mary Emery. After tragically losing her sons at ages 16 and 23, followed by the death of her husband in 1906, she used her considerable inheritance to become a strong benefactor of charitable causes throughout Greater Cincinnati. Her most ambitious project was her ‘model town’ named Mariemont after the Emery summer home in Rhode Island. Because she believed that urban ills resulted from poor city planning, Mary was determined to develop Mariemont as an example for development of other towns throughout the country. She insisted on excellence in design, architecture, environment and quality of community life for her ‘national exemplar’. Along with Charles Livingood, her business manager, and John Nolen, a nationally recognized town planner, the modest woman known as “Lady Bountiful” to grateful recipients used her vision and her fortune to begin acquiring property for this planned community in 1913, with the first buildings being completed in 1924.
Today, Mariemont has their own police and fire departments, a wide variety of retail and professional establishments, and its own award-winning school system. It is the only community in the U.S. to have an elected Town Crier, who opens the Town Meetings and leads the Memorial Day Parade. There is a wide variety of housing options throughout Mariemont, in keeping with Mary Emery’s strong commitment to serve the needs of people from all walks of life. Mariemont was managed by the Mariemont Company owned by Mrs. Emery until 1931. It was incorporated as a Village under Ohio Law in 1941, and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
