It’s hard to imagine quiet Terrace Park, Ohio as winter quarters for one of the largest circuses in the country! Yet for over 30 years beginning in the late 1800s, 35 or more railcars brought Robinson’s Circus, complete with acrobats, aerialists, trainers and a menagerie of animals into town after summer tours. Local lore abounds about panthers, lions, camels, and especially about the elephants that roamed freely through the Village, sometimes blocking streets, plowing fields and using houses as scratching posts! One elephant named Basil even gave up life on the road due to advanced age and became a ‘pet’ for the Terrace Park School!
Present-day Terrace Park, Ohio was first settled by Abraham Covalt and a group of forty-five people in 1789 who built a fort 8 miles east of Cincinnati dubbed Covalt Station. After over a hundred years’ settlement and development, it is unofficially reported the name Terrace Park was decided by a contest with a sewing machine as the prize. When there were no contest entries, the donor of the prize provided the name himself. Terrace Park was incorporated as a Village in 1893.
Today, Wooster Pike (Route 50) makes travel easy from Terrace Park to expressways and downtown Cincinnati. It is definitely not a ‘cookie-cutter’ community. Homes of various sizes, ages and styles share tree-lined streets where residents walk, jog and bike. There is strong Village government and a number of active civic groups. While there is no major commercial or retail development in Terrace Park, its proximity to Mariemont and Milford provides easy access to the amenities of both communities. Along the Little Miami River, one may walk trails in Terrace Park Nature Preserve’s woods, fields and shoreline to enjoy and to study these pristine ecosystems.
In the late 1890s, 1600 trees of varying species were planted in Terrace Park. Many of these heirlooms flourish to this day. The Village Arborist carefully monitors over 2500 Village Trees that are inventoried on a computer database. Their stately presence is a great source of pride and an enhancement to the quality of life enjoyed here.
