The Isle of Palms is a barrier island along the southern coast of South Carolina about 20 minutes from historic Charleston, South Carolina. Originally named Hunting Island and later Long Island, it is thought to be at least 25,000 years old and was first inhabited by the Seewee Indians. The Seewees were said to have greeted the first English settlers to the area by swimming out to the ships and carrying the travelers to shore. Legend has it that the only other inhabitants of the island were pirates who buried their treasure in the deserted dunes and woods, although no treasure has been found thus far.
In 1899, the island was purchased by J.S. Lawrence who renamed it the Isle of Palms because of its cooler climate and natural beauty. In 1946, efficient transportation routes to the island were established and much of the land was purchased by developer J.C. Long. As he began development, J.C. Long provided low-cost housing to veterans returning from World War II. The island slowly developed into a bedroom community while still maintaining its charm, natural beauty and desirability as a summertime getaway for wealthy Charlestonians. Twenty years later, resort and vacation real estate developers, the Sea Pines Com., seized an opportunity to build the currently renowned Wild Dunes Beach and Racquet Club.
Aside from the six miles of beaches, the island provides many biking and walking paths as well as sporting and fishing programs and a variety of parks and marinas. Isle of Palms is also a haven for golfers and tennis players with Wild Dunes offering two courses designed by Tom Fazio and 17 nationally acclaimed Har-Tru tennis courts.
According to the July 2008 Summaries Report from the Charleston Area MLS, the average sales price on the Isle of Palms, nearby Sullivan’s Island and Wild Dunes is $981,949.00.
