With its quiet residential neighborhoods and semi-tropical terrain, Sullivan’s Island, SC is a classic Charleston beachfront community. Located just 10 miles from downtown Charleston between Charleston Harbor and Breach Inlet, Sullivan’s Island is a safe place to walk or ride a bike and the pace of life is slow and easy.
Sullivan’s Island, named for the 17th century lighthouse keeper Captain Florence O’Sullivan, has inspired poets, painters and authors for generations. Edgar Allen Poe was stationed at Fort Moultrie from 1827 to 1828 and it was there that he was inspired to write his short story the “Gold Bug.” Fort Moultrie, made of palmetto logs is famous for repelling the British Fleet in 1776 and exists today as a National Monument. South Carolina is known as the Palmetto State in commemoration of this historic battle.
Once dotted with quaint sea cabins where the well to do families of Charleston would retreat to escape the summer heat, Sullivan’s Island received a facelift following Hurricane Hugo in 1989. Much of the special character of the island remains, with restaurants pubs and shops lining the main road that are filled with as many locals as visitors. There are more than four miles of beautiful white sand beaches that beckon sunbathers, fishermen, crabbers and the young at heart.
