The city of West University Place, TX is located within Harris County, Texas, just eight miles southwest of downtown Houston. Founded by former Tennessee governor Ben Hooper in 1917, West University Place received its name due to its proximity to Rice Institute, now Rice University. Throughout its early years the little community of cottages and country homes vehemently resisted consolidation with Houston, and in 1940 it incorporated with a formal city charter. Today West University Place is one of the most desirable suburbs of Houston, nicknamed “the Neighborhood City” for its tree-lined streets and “home sweet home” atmosphere. West University Place offers excellent education through the Houston Independent School District; the city is home to West University Elementary School, and jr./sr. high school students attend Pershing Middle School in Braeswood Place and Lamar High School in Upper Kirby. There is one private school within the city limits—St. Mark’s Episcopal School (K-8)—and West University Place graduates and adults have easy access to more than 55 Houston universities and colleges, including the University of Houston and the Houston Community College System.
