Park City, UT, located 32 miles east of downtown Salt Lake City, was founded by silver prospectors in the late 19th century. It wasn’t long before the town boasted nearly 10,000 residents and became the largest silver mining camp in the country. Despite several obstacles—flooding in the mines and even a major drop in the price of silver--Park City survived ghost town status and continued silver mining until the early 1970’s. Around this time, another industry began to pick up the pace in Park City—skiing. In 1963, Park City Consolidated Mines built the first ski lifts on what was then referred to as Treasure Mountain. This endeavor paved the way for Park City’s future; Park City is now home to three world class ski resorts—Park City Mountain Resort, Deer Valley Resort, and the Canyons Resort. The city served alongside Salt Lake City as a venue for the 2002 Winter Olympics.
Aside from skiing, Park City is also known as the site of The Sundance Film Festival, a 10 day spotlight on American and international independent film. The event draws more than 45,000 people from all over the world, including film and visual artists, musicians, and others who come just to spend time in the unique eclectic environment. Jill Miller, the Sundance Institute’s Managing Director, once said, “The intimacy of Park City helps to create just the right atmosphere for the Sundance Film Festival.”
As you can imagine with a town of such high esteem, the real estate in Park City is prime. The market offers everything from modest mountain homes to grand scale luxury homes. Currently, the average price for a condo in Park City is around $340,000, and the average price for a single family home is around $430,000, but homes can be found well below and well above both averages. For upscale mountain living, the area of Aerie in Park City is well known for its large lots and custom homes with impeccable views. Also, Aerie features a new development of luxury town homes, perfect for the ski in/ski out crowd. Three neighborhoods that offer a wider variety of modest and luxury homes are the communities of Prospector, Thaynes Canyon and Aspen Springs. Homes in Prospector, Park City are highly sought out due to their convenient location close to the town’s free shuttle bus route, schools, retail stores, and movie theaters, while the communities of Thaynes Canyon and Aspen Springs are near the Park City Golf Course, and contain modest single family homes as well as large luxury homes that feature a variety of architectural styles.
If you are looking for a historic home in Park City, or just prefer to live in that part of town where the past has not yet passed, there is a wide selection of condos and single family homes in the area of Old Town. Park City’s Old Town is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and features an interesting mix of miner’s cottages, Victorian renovations, vintage commercial buildings and modern condominium developments.
These are just a few of the neighborhoods you have to choose from when looking for a home in Park City, UT. Park City’s communities cater to your lifestyle so that when you move in, you feel right at home.
