Introduction
Welcome to Plymouth, VT

The town of Plymouth is located in Windsor County, Vermont, in the south central part of the state. The town was founded in the 18th century, established in the land grants of Benning Wentworth, the colonial governor of New Hampshire from 1741-1766. Wentworth referred to the area as Saltash, in reference to the borough of Saltash, Cornwall, England. Sometime after Wentworth’s death, the residents of Saltash changed the name of the town to Plymouth, perhaps in honor of the Plymouth settlement in Massachusetts. Throughout the centuries, Plymouth thrived as a quiet rural farming community. It was brought into the limelight in 1923, when Vice President Calvin Coolidge was sworn in as President at his family homestead in Plymouth Notch, following the untimely death of President Warren Harding. Throughout his life, Coolidge always spoke fondly of Plymouth and the beauty of Vermont; he once said, “There is healing in the trees for tired minds. And for overburdened spirits, there is strength in the hills.”

In the years after WWII, skiing became a popular sport and recreation, and Plymouth and its nearby areas began to receive attention for the beautiful peaks of the surrounding Green Mountains that, during the winter months, offered powdery slopes and stunning scenery. Today Plymouth is a well-known ski community with nearly 600 residents and several resorts in or near the town, including the Bear Creek Resort, the Hawk Inn and Mountain Resort, as well as the Killington Ski Resort in Killington, and the Okemo Mountain Resort in Ludlow, both of which are within a 20 minute drive of Plymouth. Although skiing is the area’s main attraction, the landscape of the Green Mountains lends itself to a variety of year-round activities including miles of hiking and biking trails, and water activities in nearby Lake Echo. The region also offers a large number of beautifully designed golf courses.

With its natural beauty, rural atmosphere, and outdoor recreation, Plymouth is a wonderful and peaceful place to call home. For those who want to relocate to Plymouth, or purchase a second home in Plymouth, the real estate market is brimming with opportunity. Homes in Plymouth are incredibly affordable, and single family homes typically feature large lots (up to 120 acres!), views of the mountains and woods, and access to hiking trails. Many of the area’s resorts are currently offering real estate options, including condominiums, townhouses and even single family homes. Ski resorts in Plymouth boast real estate that is private and secluded, yet close to the best ski spots. No matter what you are looking for—a cozy condo with a fireplace or a historic farmhouse on a hill—Plymouth real estate has what you need.
