Initially named “Stuck Junction” due to its location at the junction of the Puyallup River and Stuck Creek, (known today as the White River), Sumner was settled in 1853 and incorporated in 1891.
From its birth, rich soil and ideal climate have aided greatly in Sumner’s growth and development. Major crops include: rhubarb, raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, cherries and turf grass. Locals harvest other items they can grow in abundance such as Iris, tulip and daffodil bulbs. In 1934, the first Daffodil festival was held and is now the third ranking floral parade in the nation.
With a small town atmosphere rich in tradition, Sumner’s Community-wide celebrations mark the seasons: locals relish in The Daffodil Parade in April, bask in the Sumner Summer Arts Festival in August and delight in The Taste of Sumner in October. The day after Thanksgiving, the Holiday Season begins with the Stuck River Bridge Lighting.
Planning has helped Sumner evolve into a growing area. Bountiful in many ways, Sumner offers affordable homes and a down home, friendly atmosphere. Residents take pride in the numerous jobs close to home and year round community activities to participate in. Sumner is a great place to visit and a wonderful place to live.
