About Alleghany County, NC
The Blue Ridge Parkway runs through the mountains of North Carolina, and in the northwestern corner of the state it weaves between Ashe, Wilkes & Alleghany Counties. Long hard to get to, these areas were known as the Lost Province. Today’s good roads make a weekend in the mountains an easy trip from the cities in the Piedmont.
The cool summer temperatures, low humidity, a glorious autumn display, just enough snow to give us a good sense of winter and springs with brilliant wildflowers provide four full seasons. No wonder these areas are destinations for visitors year round.
In addition to the compelling views, a feature of this stretch of the Parkway is Doughton Park, a great place to view wildlife (from deer to fox to bobcat), but also home to several preserved pioneer cabins.
The areas adjoining the Parkway are home to a variety of primary and second homes. Cabins are nestled in the woods or perched on the continental divide and enjoy fantastic vistas.
The village of Glendale Springs in Ashe County is a delightful stop for a visit to the Church of the Frescoes, or to have lunch at the bakery, or shop for gifts.
Just a ten minute drive away is West Jefferson, the main shopping district of Ashe County.
Or visit Sparta, the main town of Alleghany County, and enjoy the small town atmosphere.
Just at the foothill of the mountains you can visit the birthplace of NASCAR – Wilkesboro, North Carolina.
