Being one of the youngest cities in the State of Alabama, Birmingham has some big shoes to fill and they do it daily with style and grace. Founded a mere 128 years ago in 1871 as just a spot where two railroad lines crossed, Birmingham has consistently been moving forward since day one. It is known as “The Magic City” due to its almost instantaneous growth in the early 1900s when residents said it all happened “like magic.” Since then Birmingham has been through good times and bad like many cities, however recovering from both a cholera epidemic as well as an economic depression showed that this city was here to stay.
Today, Birmingham is Alabama's largest and most diverse city, proving its capabilities as a big city. It is located in the rolling foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and boasts a fairly mild climate of very little snow, warm summers, and lots of sunshine. Being located in such a great place with such great weather makes the opportunities endless as far as things to do for residents and visitors. Some of the most popular outdoor activities are fishing at area lakes and reservoirs, hiking and biking in local parks and national forests such as Oak Mountain and Cheaha, and what Birmingham is most famous for, golf. Enjoy a round at many local courses including Greystone Country Club which hosts the Bruno's Memorial Classic Senior PGA tournament annually, Oxmoor Valley Golf Course, Bent Brook, or Shoal Creek.
