Grand Bay, Alabama- The Watermelon CapitalGrand Bay, Alabama is known as The Watermelon Capital! The annual Watermelon Festival held in Grand Bay, Alabama each year on July 4th has a long history dating back to the 20th century. The festival attracts many locals and tourists for an event filled day of arts and crafts, the sounds of local musicians, merchants and a chance to sample the home grown watermelons of the local farmers. The farmers here don’t just produce watermelon; there are many other home grown fruits and beautiful pecan orchards. Over many decades, hurricanes such as Hurricane Frederick and Hurricane Katrina have hit this area hard, destroying many farmlands and crops, but the pecan orchards and watermelon patches have revived and remain a vital part of this small community. Cale Gale, well known NASCAR driver, was born in Grand Bay, Alabama in 1985 and holds records at the Sunny South Raceway in Grand Bay.
