The city of Hoover, Alabama, currently populated by about 70,000 people, is a major city in the Birmingham area. In fact, the Birmingham-Hoover metropolitan statistical area is the technical name for this thriving part of Alabama. While Hoover is not as old and established as Birmingham, do not let that fool you that it is not as cutting edge and alive. Hoover not only harbors one of the biggest shopping areas in the southeast, Riverchase Galleria, also known as the most visited tourist attraction in the state of Alabama, but holds the home field of the minor-league baseball team, the Birmingham Barons, and represents a fine business community offering major companies such as Blue Cross, BE&K, BellSouth, and AmSouth Bank.
Since it was incorporated as a city in only 1967, Hoover is a very young city. Originally founded by William H. Hoover, the organizer of the Employers Mutual Insurance of Alabama, later known as the Employers Insurance of Alabama, it was known as the “Hoover Community” for a number of years before being incorporated. Hoover moved his offices to the Hoover Community area in order to provide more space to build homes for his employees.
You will not be disappointed with the number and variety of things to do in Hoover. One of the most popular, aside from the shopping, is a 30-acre botanical haven called Aldridge Gardens. Stop by Moss Rock Preserve on the way and satisfy your outdoor calling for hiking, climbing and beautiful scenes of wildlife, waterfalls and rock outcroppings amongst this exquisite 250-acre natural retreat. There are also a number of peaceful city parks located throughout Hoover for your playground and picnic needs. Golf and bicycling are also popular recreational activities residents and visitors partake in. Hoover affords a number of excellent golf courses including Robert Trent Jones Ross Bridge Golf Course and Pelham's Ballantrae Golf Club. Bicycling enthusiasts come to Hoover entering the events and races in and around Hoover as well as to take relaxing rides through the city, parks, and foothills of the Appalachian Mountains.
This city is on the move. Constantly looking for ways to improve current areas, and working on new developments all over town is a top priority for this city's expansion department. Take a tour through the following neighborhoods to see what is really going on in this city and to affirm the vast number of living, retail, and working options that are available to you: Bluff Park, the Greater Galleria Area, Hoover Boulevard North, and SouthLake. These are just a few that the city has great plans for.
