Living in Montgomery, AL

Welcome to Montgomery, Alabama and the River Region, including the surrounding communities of Prattville, Millbrook, Wetumpka, Pike Road, and Tallassee. Home to over 365,000 residents, Montgomery and the River Region offer a rich history from its earliest Indian inhabitants, to English and French settlers, to the eventual establishment of the City of Montgomery in 1819. The new city grew quickly as a center of commerce well situated alongside the Alabama River and became the state capital in 1846. Later known as the Cradle of the Confederacy where Jefferson Davis was sworn in as President of the Confederate States of America, Montgomery had the distinction almost a century later of being known as the birthplace of civil rights. Tributes to Rosa Parks, Dr. Martin Luther King, and the beautiful Maya Lin designed Civil Rights Memorial draw thousands of visitors each year.

Along with the history, the southern charm, and genuine hospitality comes a city bustling with the activities of commerce, government, industry, and education. Home to growing businesses, state government, Maxwell Air Force Base (home of Air University) and Gunter Annex, Hyundai Motor Manufacturing as well as numerous suppliers, Auburn University at Montgomery, Faulkner University, Troy University, Alabama State University, and Huntingdon College, Montgomery has outstanding opportunities for employment, service, and learning. A revitalized downtown and riverfront area draws crowds for business and pleasure.

Culture, art, sports, and recreation are an important part of the River Region’s communities. The internationally acclaimed Alabama Shakespeare Festival at Blount Cultural Park presents an outstanding season of plays each year - Shakespeare, musicals, current drama, and comedy. Several small theater groups are also active in the area.

An annual Sunday afternoon Art Trek with several galleries and exhibitions open for viewing is a popular activity.

Chamber music, chorales, concerts, and ballet performances draw thousands each year as well as subscription performing arts series. Montgomery’s AA Biscuits baseball team, water sports, fishing, hunting, running, cycling, tennis, and golf, as well as short trips to college games nearby draw both spectators and participants.

The River Region is a great place to live, work, and play with friendly people, job opportunities, educational opportunities, lovely neighborhoods both old and new, and leaders with vision for the future so come to visit and –
