Welcome to Columbus, GA

Columbus is expected to be one of the engines to restart the economy of Georgia when about 30,000 new residents settle in the West Georgia community by 2011. The transplants from the Armor School at Fort Knox will enjoy the sunny climate and warm and welcoming inhabitants when they relocate to Fort Benning to become part of the Army’s Maneuver Center of Excellence. While the “Home of the Infantry” has always provided an economic boost, international insurance giant AFLAC, credit card processor TSYS and other well- known companies are also headquartered in this vibrant and growing community.

Located on the Chattahoochee River, just a short drive from Florida’s Beaches or Georgia’s mountains, Columbus has been ranked the 4th “Best Place to Raise a Family" by Best Life magazine and the NBC’s Today Show. Columbus provides big-city excitement coupled with small-town charm and offers a wealth of recreational and cultural opportunities for both the participant and spectator. Major sports teams include the Cottonmouths hockey team and Lions indoor football team. Sports venues range from championship golf courses, tennis courts, regionally acclaimed soccer and softball fields. The Riverwalk provides abundant opportunities for walking, biking, and fishing. The city is home to the state theater of Georgia, a symphony orchestra, performing arts center, museum and world- class restaurants.

“What progress has preserved,” Columbus’ slogan, aptly describes both the visionary aspects of the citizenry as well as the desire to maintain the rich history of the area. The National Infantry Museum and National Civil War Naval Museum are both major attractions and 100-year-old homes line the cobblestoned streets of the historic district.

The educational system includes many of the highest-scoring primary and secondary schools in the state. Continuing education is also available at Columbus State University, Columbus Technical College, Troy State University and Chattahoochee Valley Community College.

Nationally recognized cancer, orthopedic and heart centers are part of Columbus’ regional health care facilities.

Numerous diverse neighborhoods make up the consolidated city/county. There are high end golf communities, estates on the water and historic homes. Budget -friendly properties are also available in the city and surrounding counties. An efficient highway system makes most commutes 20 minutes or less. With low taxes, affordable housing (median home price is $143,900) and a cost of living lower than national averages, your dream home can easily become a reality in Columbus.
