About South Mobile County, AlabamaMany retailers and professionals have made their homes in South Mobile County. Satsumas (from the tangerine family) were a major crop for the farmers until a bad freeze in 1924. Many of the farmers were financially ruined and left the area. Much of the land was then converted to pecan orchards, which still thrive in the area. Bayou La Batre, ranked among the top 30 ports in the country, is noted for its seafood which is shipped all over the country. The Blessing of the Fleet features decorated shrimp boats and is held each summer. Many employees of Theodore and even those in western Mississippi enjoy living in South Mobile County.
The cities of Grand Bay and Irvington feature modern brick homes with many properties that include several acres of land. Pecan and live oak trees are plentiful in this area.
