About Little Rock, Arkansas

The capital of Arkansas, Little Rock is a metropolitan area with a population of 628,293 and more than a million people living within an hour's drive of downtown. Little Rock got its name from the famed La Salle Expedition in 1682, when the party landed at “La Petite Roche” on the southern banks of the Arkansas River.

Centrally located, Little Rock is where the Southeast meets the Southwest, and the delta becomes the mountains. The city is 286 feet above sea level, with residential areas ranging from 300 to 630 feet. The City of Little Rock is 119.5 square miles, while North Little Rock is 49.3. Pulaski County covers 781 square miles.

Arkansas is an ideal year-round vacation destination. Central Arkansas experiences four distinct seasons, with a normal daily mean temperature of 62.1 degrees and an annual average relative humidity of 71%. Spring and fall are for the most part mild with the most severe temperatures taking place in late summer when days are hot and humid and during winter when temperatures occasionally drop into the teens.
