Scottsdale, a highly sought after resort destination, was founded in 1888 and has since sprouted into a cosmopolitan community of young up-and-comers, financially comfortable middle-agers and retiree’s enjoying their just rewards. Scottsdale not only offers the resort lifestyle to its residents, but also to many visitors with its expansive, award-winning hotels, exquisite shopping and strong interest in arts.
For a desert city, Scottsdale is also extremely lush, with many green areas and washes, such as the well-known Indian Bend Wash. Scottsdale is also known for it’s highly acclaimed golf courses and many parks, featuring fishing, bike paths, and recreational complexes.
Zone ordinances designed to protect Scottsdale’s “destination” atmosphere prohibited commercial complexes to be more than four stories in the downtown area. This caused the city to expand outward instead of upward, making Scottsdale into the 185 square miles that it is today.
Although Scottsdale stretches quite a distance, Southern Scottsdale, also known as Old Town Scottsdale, serves as one of the main shopping and cultural areas of the town. Along with the modern Mecca of Scottsdale Fashion Square, the newly built Scottsdale Waterfront is lined with clothing boutiques, art galleries, restaurants, and retail stores. Scottsdale is truly a destination must.
