The History of Akron, Ohio

Akron, Ohio called "The City at the Summit” was founded in 1825 by Simon Perkins. Named for the Greek word "akros" meaning "high point" this city grew out of the Western Reserve territory - an area of little access on the frontier. There was enormous expectation for the area as the first canal was about to open Akron to the outside world. The Ohio Canal provided the means to take citizens and goods in and out of the area and the water powered mills that were in close proximity.

During the century, courageous men with innovative ideas have descended on Akron. They brought the entrepreneurial strength that has been the trademark of this progressive city since its founding. The most famous person to relocate his business to Akron was Dr. Benjamin F. Goodrich. Dr. Goodrich's business was the first rubber company located west of the Allegheny Mountains. His bold move was a prelude to what was about to occur to the industrialized Akron. Akron became the rubber capitol of the world.

Akron is still known as the heart of the rubber industry, and is now the home of many of America's most important manufactures. The economic mixture that the area now has provides economic security that was not as evident in the past. Just one example is the nearly 400 Akron companies with more than 35,000 employees who are involved in the polymer industry. Akron is recognized as the world's leader in polymer research through the University of Akron Institute of Polymer Science. Akron, Ohio is an exciting and diversified city positioned for growth in today's technological arena.
