Living in Amherst, VA

A perfect rural retreat, Amherst is a picture perfect place to live. The true outdoorsman will never be at a loss for activities as Amherst residents have easy access to the George Washington National Forest as well as the Blue Ridge Parkway where camping, hunting and canoeing are just a few possibilities. Quaint shops and businesses dot the town of Amherst. Local favorites include Traveler’s Restaurant and the Briar Patch. Golf is also popular, as Amherst offers several notable courses.

The beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway passes through the County of Amherst. At 469 miles in total length, this parkway extends from Virginia and into North Carolina via the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains. Enjoy hiking, biking and picnicking at your favorite and scenic overlook while enjoying the spectacular mountain and valley vistas.

Just a hop over the James River you can discover the city of Lynchburg, home of the Hillcats minor league baseball team as well as a host of activities. Shopping, dining and entertainment venues are readily available. Additionally, Amherst and Lynchburg offer seven colleges providing a myriad of undergraduate and graduate opportunities.

While in Lynchburg, why not treat the children to Amazement Square, a fabulous children’s interactive museum. Great for children under 10 years old this four story hands-on museum features exhibits to keep little hands busy! When finished there, continue on to the local Lynchburg Community Market. This farmers market is known to be the third oldest farmer’s Market in the Country. Open year round it plays host to various events each year.

A true gem located just an hour from Charlottesville; Amherst, Virginia is a wonderful place to call home!
