Welcome to Appomattox, VAThe town of Appomattox is the seat of Appomattox County, Virginia, located just 21 miles east of Lynchburg and 93 miles west of Richmond. Widely known for its Civil War heritage, Appomattox is a small, yet significant and historically rich community of Central Virginia. Just two miles north of the town center is the Appomattox Court House National Historic Park—the location of the first Appomattox court house, where Confederate General Robert E. Lee and Union General Ulysses S. Grant brought about the long awaited end to the Civil War in 1865. From living history at the Clover Hill Village to the little nuggets of knowledge to be had at Fred’s Car Museum and the homestead of Joel Sweeney (the creator of the 5-string banjo), Appomattox offers a historical gem at every turn.
The town of Appomattox’s careful preservation of its treasured past shows in its charming wooded streets and collection of grand, turn-of-the-century homes. An all-American “Main Street” community, Appomattox boasts an impressive Courthouse Square and historic downtown district that showcases beautiful Colonial architecture. In downtown Appomattox, residents and visitors can enjoy shopping the quaint boutiques and antique stores, and dining at an array of diners, cafes, and fine establishments. Some locally-owned favorites are Baines Books & Coffee, Granny Bee’s Restaurant, and the Appomattox Tea Room. The district is also home to the Appomattox County Historical Museum, and on weekends and special occasions, the town offers horse-drawn carriage tours of Appomattox’s key historical landmarks.
