Attractions in Aquone, NC

Residents of Aquone enjoy an abundance of attractions and recreation due to their convenient location within the Great Smoky Mountains region. Just 30 miles south of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and with Lake Nantahala and Nantahala River at their back doors, Aquonites can hike and bicycle through miles of scenic trails, plus boat and fish the freshwater trout found in the river cascades. The Nantahala Gorge offers thrilling whitewater rafting; for beginners, the Nantahala Outdoor Center near Bryson City provides classes and instruction on rafting, canoeing, kayaking and other adventures. In addition to outdoor recreation, residents of Aquone can take advantage of the myriad of Smoky Mountains attractions available, such as dining and shopping in quaint mountain towns, gaming at Harrah’s Cherokee Casino & Hotel, or visiting the region’s many historical museums and cultural attractions. Macon County and the Smoky Mountains region are home to the Macon County Historical Museum, the Museum of the Cherokee Indian, the Oconaluftee Indian Village, the Scottish Tartans Museum, and the John C. Campbell Folk School. Also, the nearby community of Sylva is home to the Southwestern Community College, which has been recently ranked as one of North Carolina’s “Exceptional” community colleges, and as the 4th best community college in the nation by Washington Monthly. Aquone is serviced by Macon County Schools out of nearby Franklin, with six elementary schools, one middle school and one high school.
