Welcome to Arvada, COThe city of Arvada is located in both Jefferson and Adams Counties, Colorado, just 8 miles northwest of downtown Denver. Nestled in the beautiful Rocky Mountains, Arvada was founded as Colorado’s very first gold strike town, established when a man named Lewis Ralston discovered the valuable metal nearby in 1850. Known as Ralston’s Point for the next 20 years, the growing town wasn’t given its present name until Benjamin Wadsworth set up a local post office in 1870, officially designating it “Arvada,” after his brother, Hiram Arvada Haskins. Arvada was considered a regional commercial and social hub for northern Jefferson County, and the town incorporated as a city of 600 people in 1904.
Today Arvada remains a thriving part of the Denver-Boulder metropolitan area, boasting diverse business and industry, excellent educational opportunities, and a tight-knit community that prepares for the future while preserving its treasured past. Despite having a population of over 105,000 people—the eighth largest in the state—Arvada fosters a comfy “hometown” atmosphere; in fact, the town is the only accredited National Main Street Community in Metro Denver. Its “Olde Town Arvada” district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and features vibrant, modern retail stores and restaurants set in some of the city’s oldest preserved buildings. Olde Town Arvada is also home to a great community theater—the Festival Playhouse—home of the volunteer-based Player’s Guild. Overall, Arvada has a strong arts community, and the premier venue in the city is the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities, which offers an exciting year-round calendar of theater, concerts, art exhibits, and classes for all ages.
