Asbury Park, NJ - "The Crown Jewel of the Jersey Shore"The city of Asbury Park is part of Monmouth County, New Jersey, located approximately 60 miles south of New York City along the dazzling Jersey Shore. Founded in 1871 by New York businessman James A. Bradley, Asbury Park grew quickly as a seaside resort-style community. Bradley developed much of the city’s infrastructure, procured electric service, and constructed a boardwalk, an orchestra pavilion, and a pier. Within its first decade, other developers and investors took interest in Asbury Park, and gradually added attractions such as Ernest Schnitzler’s Palace Merry-Go-Round and many grand luxury hotels, such as the Plaza Hotel. Asbury Park’s rush of more than 600,000 people during the summers typically consisted of New Yorkers and Philadelphians, traveling down on the New York and Long Branch Railroad. Beginning in the 1890’s, the city experienced a housing boom as people began to fall in love with Asbury Park and wished to own year-round or vacation homes. Gorgeous Victorian homes were built during this time, many of which still exist today. The 1920’s also brought tremendous growth to Asbury Park with the addition of the Paramount Theatre and Convention Hall Complex, the Casino Arena, and the Carousel House—all designed by Warren Whitney of New York.
Unfortunately, after the Great Depression and WWII, Asbury Park fell into disrepair, especially as the new Garden State Parkway carried many visitors off to newer shopping centers and theme parks away from the shore. The city’s dilapidated state led to riots in the 70’s, and much of the attractions that had once made Asbury Park one of the premier destinations on the Jersey Shore closed down or were demolished. It wasn’t until 2002 that efforts were made to revitalize the city’s downtown area and boardwalk, and today Asbury Park is quickly regaining the vibrancy that attracted people by the thousands only 100 years ago. The city has earned regional recognition for its billion dollar redevelopment project on the waterfront, as well as other major projects throughout the city that, when completed, will earn the city the nickname “the Crown Jewel of the Jersey Shore” once again.
