About Barre, Vermont

Barre is known as the Granite Capital of the World. Located just 6 miles from Montpelier, the capital of Vermont, Barre is comprised of Barre City and Barre Town. The city is centered in a valley straddling the North Branch of the Winooski River while the town surrounds the city on the plateau above the valley.

Barre’s granite industry took off with the introduction of the railroad in the 1800’s. Hundreds of Scottish and Italian stone cutters emigrated to Barre to ply their trade. The skill of these craftsmen is what gave Barre its reputation for producing high quality finished stone products. Barre Granite and the work of members of the Barre Guild can be seen all over the United States. Many of the buildings in Washington DC are made with Barre Granite. Each year thousands of tourists visit the Vermont Granite Museum and the Rock of Ages Visitor Center to learn more about this important Barre Heritage.

Barre is much more than Granite. Residents and visitors enjoy the Barre Opera House, Studio Place Arts and the Vermont History Museum. Barre is also home to Thunder Road International Speedbowl. The self proclaimed “Nation’s site of excitement” is a high banked 1/4 mile asphalt oval track. For golfers there are several courses in the vicinity including the Country Club of Barre.

Barre has an incredible range of housing stock from modest neighborhood homes and downtown multi-family houses to high end luxury homes with incredible mountain views and lots of acreage.
