About Arcadia, California

Arcadia, CA is best known for three things: The Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Gardens where many movies have been filmed, Santa Anita Park a racetrack - one of the most famous thoroughbred horseracing tracks in the country, and finally its highly ranked public school system.

Originally Arcadia was part of a land grant given by the Spanish King in the mid-1800’s, part of the Rancho Santa Anita. In 1875, Lucky Baldwin purchased 8,000 acres of Santa Anita to make it his home and to start farming the land. Baldwin, who became the town’s first mayor, named Arcadia after a rural region in the southern peninsula of Greece. It was also Lucky Baldwin who first brought peacocks to Arcadia, which still roam the arboretum and its neighboring streets.

Today, Arcadia is primarily a bedroom community. Its residents are often drawn here by the Arcadia Unified School District, continuously ranked among the highest performing public school systems in California.
