Newbury Park is a community within the City of Thousand Oaks, located in eastern Ventura County, California, approximately 39 miles west of Los Angeles and 12 miles east of the Pacific coast. Situated in the picturesque Conejo Valley, the region of Newbury Park was traveled by non-Native explorers as early as the 16th century—Spanish conquistador Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo was the first to claim the land for Spain. However, the area remained largely unsettled until three centuries later when the Spanish governor granted the land to various loyal soldiers. Once the United States gained control of southern California in 1847, pioneers from the east began establishing small communities in Conejo Valley, with post offices, train stops and eventually motorcar roads and highways to connect them. In the early 20th century, the prominent Janss Family purchased 10,000 acres of farm land with a vision of creating a master planned community that would eventually incorporate in 1964 as the City of Thousand Oaks, named so for its many treasured ancient oak trees. Newbury Park, although part of the Janss Corporation’s master planned community, was not incorporated into the City of Thousand Oaks until the 1960’s. Newbury Park was named for the area’s first postmaster, Egbert Starr Newbury.
Today Newbury Park boasts 40,000 of the City of Thousand Oaks’ 125,000 residents, and has been highly acclaimed in recent years for its thriving economy and career opportunities, sparkling education system, safe neighborhoods and exciting attractions; in fact, Money magazine ranked Newbury Park and the City of Thousand Oaks as one of the nation’s “Best Places To Live” in both 2005 and 2006. Newbury Park and the City of Thousand Oaks maintains a big presence in California’s high tech sector as home to the corporate headquarters of Amgen, General Dynamics Corporation, J.D. Power and Associates, Skyworks Solutions and more. Offering an even wider career base, the regional offices of Verizon, Volkwagen, Audi, General Motors, and WellPoint are also nearby. The community of Newbury Park is served by the award-winning Conejo Valley Unified School District, which operates four high schools, four middle schools, and 19 elementary schools. Out of 27 schools, 16 are considered Distinguished California Schools and four have been named National Blue Ribbon Schools.
