Golden is one of Colorado’s treasured historic cities, nestled on the banks of Clear Creek in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. The city boasts a vibrant community and a friendly small-town atmosphere despite being only 15 miles west of the big city of Denver. Many Golden residents enjoy an easy commute throughout the Denver-Boulder metropolitan area; Golden is linked to five major routes, including I-70, CO-470 and U.S. Highway 6. With a well-established, quality public education system headed by the Jefferson County R-1 School District, Golden is a great place to raise a family. The city has three elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school—Golden High School—which is Colorado’s oldest senior high school. Also, Golden is home to the state’s oldest public college—the Colorado School of Mines—a world-class research institution for engineering and science.
Taking on the nickname, “Home of the 2 Hour Vacation,” Golden offers an exciting mix of attractions that draw residents and visitors from afar for lunchtime siestas, romantic evening dates, or fun family weekends. Golden attractions include unique shopping and dining at Historical Downtown Golden, a variety of art & theater venues, historic sites, and more. The city is home to the Jefferson Symphony Orchestra, the Foothills Art Center and two theater/entertainment groups—the Heritage Square Music Hall and the Miners Alley Playhouse. For its relatively small size, Golden has a surprising number of museums that range in subject from quilting to geology to the life and times of Buffalo Bill (who is buried on Golden’s Lookout Mountain). In addition, residents enjoy numerous festivals throughout the year, such as Heart & Soul Month, Goldenfest, and Buffalo Bill Days. Because of its mountainous location, Golden also offers an array of exhilarating outdoor recreation that includes scenic hiking and biking in the Rockies, flyfishing in Clear Creek, and whitewater canoeing and kayaking at the Clear Creek Whitewater Park. And for the quiet observer, the city is home to the Lookout Mountain Nature Center & Preserve, a 110-acre park that provides the perfect environment for discovering the region’s natural beauty.
