The History of Golden, COThe city of Golden was founded as a mining camp in the heat of the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush of 1859, and was aptly named after one of Clear Creek Valley’s first gold miners, Tom Golden. From the start, Golden City (as it was called then), was the jewel of Colorado due to its role as a supplier for the mining districts and as a gateway to the west for freight wagons, and eventually the railroad. Its location on the banks of Clear Creek enabled the city to be highly industrious. Golden was an important manufacturing center for the region; some of the city’s early businesses were a cigar factory, a candy factory, various mills, brick making, a glass plant and stone quarries.
Golden was such a leading economic center for the region that it was chosen as the seat of Jefferson County in 1860, and even served as the capitol of the Colorado Territory for five years, until government was moved to Denver in 1867, the year Colorado achieved statehood. Despite losing the capitol, Golden continued to flourish, and throughout the rest of the 19th and 20th centuries the city grew steadily, becoming home to world renowned businesses and institutions such as the Coors Brewery and the Colorado School of Mines.
