The Colorado National Monument
The Colorado National Monument, near the towns of Fruita and Grand Junction, CO, is the unique creation of rock crafted by years of wind and water flow that has given rise to gorgeous rock formations and amazing canyon views. This 20,000 acre piece of land is what some call the most beautiful park in the western United States. The land itself is semi-desert, built high upon the Colorado Plateau.
Monument Canyon lines the entire length of the park, and is home to its main attractions, including Independence Monument, Window Rock and Coke Ovens, all rock formations that provide picture perfect views of the Canyon. Hikers can explore the short trails leading to spectacular over-looks or the longer back country trails winding through canyons and across mesas. With variations of length and endurance levels, the hundreds of trails surrounding the Colorado National Monument are perfect for any hiker. Mountain biking, horseback riding and fishing are all available in the area.
Home to lots of wild life--small mammals and reptiles, large birds and beautiful grasses—this beautiful piece of Colorado perfection is an outdoorsmen’s dream. Dwarf Pinion and Juniper thrive on the hard to find streams while grasses and wildflowers take hold in moist cracks.
There is no doubt as to why the Colorado National Monument has such a great reputation and is referred to as one of the most beautiful places in the country. Perfect for visitors, back country camping is permitted almost anyplace within the park boundaries, and the Visitor Center is open daily throughout the year.
