South of Cherry Hills Village is Greenwood Village, CO, home to 14,500 residents and a “daytime” population of approximately 36,000 members of the business community. Once primarily a rural community, today Greenwood Village is a blend of urban and residential areas served by the Cherry Creek and Littleton school districts and home to the nationally recognized Denver Technological Center (DTC). In addition, 40 miles of trails wind through its diverse landscapes. Trails provide recreational opportunities, preserve community and neighborhood character, protect natural habitat, and allow for improved water and air quality. Approximately 5.47 miles of premier regional trail, the High Line Canal, winds through the Village. The city is situated in Arapahoe County, immediately south of Denver, encompassing 8.35 square miles.
Historically, the Village was farmland with orchards of cherry, apple, apricot, plum, and pear trees. During the 1930s and ‘40s, the area contained a mixture of farmers, suburbanites and people who lived in Denver, but would come south to “country homes” for the summer. As development began to creep south from Denver, residents worried about that the city would threaten their pastoral lifestyles and incorporated as the town of Greenwood Village in 1950, naming their new town after the historic Greenwood Ranch.
Greenwood Village today still provides its residents with a pastoral quality of life just 20 minutes from downtown Denver. New homes can be found in The Preserve, a planned community of luxury custom homes on 1 – 2 acres sites. The 45-acre Marjorie Perry Nature Preserve is the centerpiece of this neighborhood offering wildlife and waterfowl watching as well as walking and biking trails. Enclaves of intimate neighborhoods with older homes on large lots can also be found tucked away from the main arteries – roads and light rail -- that keep Greenwood Village in close proximity to all the metro area has to offer.
