The Community of Redding, CT

In addition to the many invitations to play outdoors, Redding residents also enjoy a variety of cultural attractions throughout the New York metropolitan area. Being nearly 300 years old, Redding offers fascinating historical districts, such as Redding Central and parts of the village of Georgetown, and well preserved historical landmarks, such as the Little Red Brick Schoolhouse and the Old Town House on the Green both built in the 1700s. One of Redding’s most famous residents was Mark Twain, who lived in Redding towards the end of his life (1908-09) and established the town’s first public library by donating pieces of his own collection and by fundraising among his many friends and acquaintances. The original library building that was raised due to Twain’s efforts has been added to extensively, and the library continues to serve the public of Redding today.

Although Redding is largely residential, its residents can find unique shopping, dining, arts and entertainment less than 10 miles away in Ridgefield, or other neighboring communities. Ridgefield is home to a variety of visual arts galleries; the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum is the most well-known, and has received international attention for its many exhibits. Ridgefield is also home to many performing arts groups, such as the Ridgefield Symphony Orchestra, the Ridgefield Civic Ballet and the Ridgefield Contemporary Dance Ensemble. The Ridgefield Playhouse is the most widely used venue in town, and has welcomed many famous artists such as Joan Baez, Paul Newman, and Marcel Marceau.
