Living in Cold Spring, NY

Cold Spring, also called Cold Spring-on-Hudson, is a village located in Philipstown, Putnam County, New York. This highly acclaimed community situated on the east bank of the scenic Hudson River began as a tiny settlement until 1818, when local citizen Gouveneur Kemble established the West Point Foundry. The foundry played a key role in ironworks manufacturing, particularly in the production of steam engines, piping for water mains in New York City, Boston and Chicago, as well as sugar milling equipment, and smaller iron products for household use. It reached its peak during the Civil War, when it became the production site of Parrott Guns. The success of the foundry brought a major population boost to Cold Spring, employing over 1400 people in its heyday.

Today Cold Spring boasts a happy population of over 2,800 people. The village allures many visitors and residents to enjoy its intensely scenic location that is perfect for outdoor recreation. The natural beauty of the Hudson River and the surrounding Hudson Highlands mountain range not only set the stage for spectacular views from various points in the village, but also provide opportunities for hiking, biking, boating, and kayaking. And for those who love to shop, Cold Spring’s pedestrian-friendly Main Street features nearly 50 boutiques, antique stores and restaurants, all within a ¼ square mile. But many people are attracted to Cold Spring because it is still very much a historic community; in fact, it is nationally recognized as one of the best preserved 19th-century townscapes. The residents of Cold Spring throughout the years have worked hard to keep the village’s most charming attributes. Cold Spring was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982, and features 225 historic structures of various architectural styles.
