Welcome to Columbia, SC

Today, Columbia continues to serve as the South Carolina state capital, and boasts a growing population of over 122,000 people. A city with many accolades, Columbia offers a wide range of attractions that appeal to everyone, from shopaholics to sports fans. Columbia boasts an active and enthusiastic arts community that supports the city’s many galleries and performance arts venues. The city’s largest collection of worldly artworks from Ancient to Contemporary is housed at The Columbia Museum of Art, while local artists of Columbia proudly display their works all over the city in galleries, festivals, and even in the streets and parks. The Koger Center for the Arts at the University of South Carolina hosts a variety of theater, music and dance performances including Broadway shows, while Columbia’s Colonial Center, Carolina Coliseum and the Township Auditorium welcome some of the biggest stars of today’s music scene.

Aside from its exciting arts and theater venues, Columbia also offers entertainment for sports fans and outdoor enthusiasts. University of South Carolina sports provides residents with plenty of opportunities to cheer on their favorite teams from baseball and basketball to tennis and track. Columbia is also home to East Coast Hockey League’s the Columbia Inferno, and MLB, NFL, and NBA sports are just around the corner at Charlotte, NC or Atlanta, GA. For those who love to get their own game on, Columbia offers a large number of parks and recreation areas with public courts and swimming pools, as well as many greenways and walking paths. Because the city has three rivers flowing through it—the Congaree, Broad, and Saluda—Columbia is a dream for kayak and canoe enthusiasts. And for boaters, campers, swimmers and fishermen, Columbia’s Lake Murray is the place to be; at its widest point, Lake Murray is 41 miles long, 14 miles wide and has over 500 miles of shoreline. Columbia is also a great place for kids to get acquainted with nature through great attractions such as the Congaree National Park, home to the largest bald cypress tree, and the top-rated Riverbanks Zoo & Garden, which allows kids to observe over 350 species from around the world.
