Today, Columbia continues to serve as the South Carolina state capital, and boasts a growing population of over 122,000 people. Aside from its exciting arts and theater venues, Columbia also offers entertainment for sports fans and outdoor enthusiasts. University of South Carolina sports provides residents with plenty of opportunities to cheer on their favorite teams from baseball and basketball to tennis and track. Columbia is also home to East Coast Hockey League’s the Columbia Inferno, and MLB, NFL, and NBA sports are just around the corner at Charlotte, NC or Atlanta, GA. For those who love to get their own game on, Columbia offers a large number of parks and recreation areas with public courts and swimming pools, as well as many greenways and walking paths. Because the city has three rivers flowing through it—the Congaree, Broad, and Saluda—Columbia is a dream for kayak and canoe enthusiasts. And for boaters, campers, swimmers and fishermen, Columbia’s Lake Murray is the place to be; at its widest point, Lake Murray is 41 miles long, 14 miles wide and has over 500 miles of shoreline. Columbia is also a great place for kids to get acquainted with nature through great attractions such as the Congaree National Park, home to the largest bald cypress tree, and the top-rated Riverbanks Zoo & Garden, which allows kids to observe over 350 species from around the world.
