Welcome to Cumberland, INThe town of Cumberland is part of both Hancock and Marion Counties in central Indiana, about ten miles equidistant between Indianapolis and Greenfield. Founded in 1831 as a stopping point for travelers on the historic National Road, Cumberland, IN was named after Cumberland, MD—the eastern town in which the road originated. Starting out with just six streets, Cumberland, IN slowly gained residents and by 1884 it claimed a population of over 400 and supported a railway station, one hotel, two sawmills, two blacksmiths, three churches, and a schoolhouse. At the turn of the 20th century, an Interurban line was extended to Cumberland and brought many new residents, visitors, and passersby. All in all, Cumberland boasted nine trains for daily passenger and cargo transportation, which allowed Cumberland residents complete access to surrounding communities. One of Cumberland’s main attractions throughout the early and mid 1900’s was Buckley’s Restaurant, a roadside BBQ stand that opened in 1922. Although the building is now occupied by Sero’s Restaurant, many images of Buckley’s glory days can be seen in U.S. 40 vintage postcards, matchbooks, and other memorabilia. Cumberland incorporated as a town in 1951, and until 1968 it was entirely located in Marion County. Once the town annexed the Cumberland Heights subdivision, it expanded into Hancock County, where all of its future development will occur.
