Welcome to Delaware City, DE

Delaware City, DE, is a riverfront town located along that part of the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal where it feeds into the Delaware River. Founded in the early 1800’s, Delaware City has a rich heritage as a shipping town and, with over 250 structures, its historic district is one of the largest in Delaware.

In its early years, Delaware City served as a shipping port bustling with commercial trade specializing in everything from fish & peaches to sheet metal. With the introduction of the railroad and the industrial age, Delaware City’s draw as center of commerce waned but its appeal as a residential area remained.

Although small, Delaware City includes many architecturally significant buildings from the Federal style of the 1820’s to the mail-order catalog homes made popular in the 1920’s. A blacksmith’s shop is still in operation and a popular crab house occupies an historic inn. Views of the Delaware River, Pea Patch Island and the New Jersey shore can be seen from the park at the foot of Clinton Street, Delaware City’s main street.

Delaware City serves as a portal to many local attractions such as Fort Delaware State Park, Fort DuPont, Battery Park, and the Delaware Estuary Marshes. Residents & visitors can take advantage of the many site-seeing & recreational opportunities around this quaint town as well as spend a leisurely time enjoying the shopping & dining the downtown area has to offer. Popular annual events such as Delaware City Day & Canal Fest further bring attention to this community that is not only concerned with infusing its town with new activity but also with preserving its natural & historical landmarks.
