About Darlington County, SC
The county of Darlington was formed in 1785, and is located in the northeastern part of South Carolina. This area was settled in the mid-eighteenth century by Welsh, Scotch-Irish, and English farmers, who grew cotton primarily. Darlington, suggested to be named for the Revolutionary War Colonel Darlington is a center for tobacco farming. More recently, Darlington is notorious for the Darlington Raceway, a speedway that is home to an annual NASCAR Southern 500 race. Darlington is also the site of the National Motorsports Press Association (NMPA) Hall of Fame.
