The city of Duluth's origins can be traced back to one family: the Howells. After the Cherokee-inhabited forest land became a part of Gwinnett County, Evan Howell moved from North Carolina to begin anew. He was a major influence on the area, farming, selling goods, and operating a ferry.

In 1871, a railway was constructed and a depot was erected in what was known at the time as Howell's Cross Roads. Shortly after, Evan Howell's grandson was asked to deliver an address and to name the town as well. A well-known story of the time was of Duluth, Minnesota's struggle for funding to create a railway of its own. Howell chose the name of Duluth for the burgeoning Georgia city.

Duluth's initial success could be attributed to the foresight and determination of Evan Howell. To this day, the trend continues, and Duluth has become a model city for Gwinnett County. Even though the Atlanta suburb has experienced tremendous growth recently, it's managed to retain its small-town charm while blossoming into a successful city that's also a wonderful place to raise a family.

Today, Duluth's corporate sector is home to 1,600 businesses, providing its residents with plenty of employment opportunities. However, Duluth is by no means a city that's all work and no play. Duluth residents enjoy the many attractions that also bring visitors into the city, including the annual Fall Festival celebrating the arrival of autumn, and sports events for the Gwinnett Gladiators and golf tournaments at the TPC at Sugarloaf golf course.
